Tree Planting -- February 2011

We planted many more trees in the empty spaces at Longdale Recreation Field, Thorpe Marriott, thanks to the help of dogged volunteers, coming out on a chilly, February day! See the most enthusiastic in the pictures above!

We were pleased to see that the amount of dog poo and litter has reduced over the last year, and that not so much damage has happened to our little trees. We hope that this continues, footballers permitting! Sorry guys, but small trees and footballs are not a natural pairing! If you could try and keep them off the planted area we would be grateful. Just to give them a chance to grow....

Here are some pictures of our latest volunteers hard at work!

Our trees are growing well this spring, and considering how hard the winter was, we think this summer will see that end of Longdale Recreation Field showing a real difference. Wander along and see how many different types of tree you can spot... which ones seem to be surviving the conditions the best?

What is Longdale ? A plantation in the making

The development of a corner of the Longdale playing field into a small woodland area began in the autumn of 2006. Drayton Parish Council kindly gave permission.

For a few years prior to securing this site, Draituna Trees were actively involved with the local schools planting acorns in the tree nursery located at the infant school.

In November 2006 the first saplings were planted, which not only included the small oaks grown by the children but a range of other native trees and shrubs including, ash, field maple, cherry, dogwood, spindle, goat willow, elder, privet and guelder rose. A community planting day also helped to ensure all the young trees and shrubs were safely planted.

In November 2007, 2008 and 2009 further planting events were completed adding to the already established trees and shrubs in the area. Once again the local community and school children assisted in the planting.
